I’ve been to Nebraska.  It is a great place for farmers, America’s bread basket.  But it is hard to imagine any legislation that could cause gay people to start flocking there en masse.

After Omaha and Lincoln passed anti-discrimination ordinances that were considered controversial (because, apparently, some forms of discrimination just aren’t considered problematic), Grand Island, Nebraska attempted one of its own … and it failed by a wide margin:

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — After emotional debate Tuesday night, the City Council rejected an ordinance that would have banned discrimination based on sexual orientation.

The council voted 8-2 against the proposal after rejecting separate amendments that would have postponed a decision for 30 days and placed the ordinance before voters.

The measure would have made it illegal to fail to hire or promote based on sexual orientation.

Well, there’s certainly no chance that anyone will think of Grand Island when they think “gay-friendly.” So, mission accomplished on that one, city council.
